Futurama is coming back as a one-off podcast episode

Animated science fiction show Futurama is coming back to life as special podcast episode that will reunite the show’s cast and writers. The audio drama ties in with the mobile game Futurama: Worlds of Tomorrow, and will premiere on Nerdist September 14th.

The app is a tie-in game released earlier this summer from mobile game studio TinyCo which puts players through a new story with the show’s characters. The podcast will take off from the game’s story, and as a bonus, all of the show’s original voice actors are onboard to reprise their characters. The game’s users have an opportunity to check out the podcast a bit early, with a sneak peak hidden in one of the game’s features.

Created by Matt Groening, Futurama ran for seven seasons between 1999 and 2013 on Fox and Comedy Central. The show follows the misadventures of Philip J. Fry, a hapless pizza delivery guy who is accidentally cryogenically frozen and awoken a thousand years later, where he falls in with the employees of Planet Express, an interstellar package delivery service. If you haven’t seen the show, you can watch the entire series on Hulu, but for longtime fans who have mourned the loss of the show since its cancellation, this episode will be a special return to the world and characters that we’ve been missing.
