Student accused of hate-crime will not be 'intimidated into silence' for joking about ISIS

Robbie Travers, 21, made the comment on Facebook, but it prompted a furious reaction from a fellow student.

He and Esme Allman attend the University of Edinburgh. Last night a spokesman there confirmed her complaint was being investigated.

The row began when law student Mr Travers commented on a recent US military strike on an base in Afghanistan: “I’m glad we could bring these barbarians a step closer to collecting their 72 virgins.”

Ms Allman, a second-year history student, claimed the post could place minority students “at risk and in a state of panic”.

She added: “Given my membership of the Black and Minority Ethnic Liberation Group at the university, I take issue with this blatant Islamaphobia.”

But Mr Travers hit back, saying: “I am deeply worried that I am being investigated for comments which are expressions of opinion in a jovial way.

“I will not be intimidated into being silenced and will continue to make criticism of hateful ideas.”
